バイオテクノロジーと工業的農業への批判

農作物や食品を遺伝子操作することは、近代工業的農業の延長上にある。遺伝子組み換え技術により工業的農業を牛耳る大企業に人々の食糧をコントロールするより大きな権力を明け渡す恐れがある。これらの大企業は決算報告書の数字を最大重要課題とするため、環境も私たちの健康も農民や原住民たちの権利も負の要素として脅かされてしまう。

農薬・薬品化学企業と種苗会社の買収合併により誕生したいわゆる「生命科学」企業は、政府官僚を味方に遺伝子操作された(GE)作物や食品の安全性を宣伝する大規模な広報活動を繰り広げている。「食糧第一」によるGE反対キャンペーンは、厳密な調査結果に基づきながら大企業が流した安全神話を打ち破る努力を続けている。調査結果は遺伝子組み換え技術が飢餓問題の解決策にならないことを明確に示している。遺伝子組み換え作物は第三世界の農村にも先進国の農業にも効果的な技術ではなく、逆に大きなリスクの可能性を秘めており危険性の全容はまだ解明されていない。

「食糧第一」はすべての遺伝子組み換え品種が健康と環境に与える安全性が全面的に確証されるまで、商業的な遺伝子組み換え作物と食品の使用を即座に中止することを呼びかけている。遺伝子組み換え作物を管理する法規制を改善し、社会全体の利益を考慮した客観的かつ批判的な検査を経ることを要求する。また研究費用の偏りにより、もっと効果的な、環境に調和し社会的不平等を是正するアグロエコロジカルなオルタナティブ農業技術の研究を阻害しないことを要求する。
