How a scientific understanding of our planet as a living whole can lead to a deeper relationship with nature
by Stephan Harding
Stephan Harding is a regular contributor to courses at Schumacher College. He is the resident ecologist, giving talks on Gaia Theory and deep ecology to most course groups. He also works with Gaian scientist James Lovelock on Gaian computer modelling. Stephan is also Academic Course Tutor on the one-year MSc in Holistic Science course run by Schumacher College in partnership with the University of Plymouth.
THE word 'ecology' is used by Western scientists to refer to the branch of biology that examines interactions determining the distribution and abundance of living beings. Ecologists go out in the field to quantify nature, to break it down into numbers which are then placed in computers to tease apart the complex inter-relationships in the living world.
Schumacher College is an international centre for ecological studies which welcomes course participants from all over the world.
